Protecting Your Energy Without Feeling Selfish
Protecting your energy is not selfish — it is essential. When you work in childcare, you spend so much of your day giving your time, attention, patience and emotional energy to other people.
Over time, constantly giving without allowing yourself time to recharge can leave you feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and emotionally drained.
Protecting your energy does not mean that you care less about the children, families or colleagues around you. It means recognising that you matter too.
In this lesson, we are going to look at simple ways you can protect your energy without feeling guilty for putting your own wellbeing on the list.
Why Protecting Your Energy Matters
When your energy is constantly depleted, everything can begin to feel harder. Small challenges can feel overwhelming, patience can become shorter, and you may find yourself reaching the end of the working day with very little left for yourself or the people you love.
Protecting your energy helps you to:
• reduce feelings of overwhelm and exhaustion
• maintain healthier emotional boundaries
• have more patience and resilience during challenging days
• create space for rest and recovery
• enjoy your work without allowing it to consume all of your energy
Looking after your energy isn't about doing less or letting people down. It is about recognising your limits and making choices that allow you to continue giving without completely draining yourself.
Notice What Drains Your Energy
he first step in protecting your energy is noticing where it is going.
Think about the parts of your working day that leave you feeling particularly drained. It may not always be the busiest moments. Sometimes it is the emotional demands, constantly being available to others, difficult conversations, trying to keep everyone happy, or feeling unable to say no.
Ask yourself:
• What situations leave me feeling most drained?
• Which tasks take more from me than I realise?
• Am I taking responsibility for things that aren't mine to carry?
• Do I say yes when I really want or need to say no?
• Where could I create a little more space for myself?
You don't have to change everything at once. Simply becoming aware of what drains your energy can help you identify where small boundaries or changes could make a big difference.
Small Ways to Protect Your Energy
Protecting your energy doesn't require huge changes. Small, consistent choices can make a real difference.
Try:
taking your full break whenever possible rather than working through it
• stepping away for a few quiet minutes when you feel overwhelmed
• saying “I’ll get back to you” instead of automatically saying yes
• allowing yourself to leave work at work
• reducing unnecessary commitments outside working hours
• asking for help rather than trying to manage everything yourself
• giving yourself permission to rest without having to earn it
Remember, a boundary does not have to be dramatic to be effective. Every time you protect a little of your time, attention or emotional energy, you are reinforcing the message that your wellbeing matters too.
